Indianapolis police are investigating after a man and a woman were found dead during a welfare check at a home on the city's northeast side on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Officers went to the 6500 block of Discovery Drive South, near Castleton, just after 1:15 p.m. They found the woman dead in the backyard and the man dead inside the house. Both had gunshot wounds, and a gun was found inside the home.

IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said there is no threat to the community, and that investigators are looking at all possibilities. The two have not yet been publicly identified by the Marion County Coroner's Office, and police say they have been in touch with the family. Dogs found in the home were not harmed and were taken to Indianapolis Animal Care Services.

Thompson urged anyone who is struggling, or who knows someone who is, to reach out for help, pointing to the city's clinician-led response and mobile crisis teams. The case follows an Oct. 11 case on Lakeshire Lane in which a 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his mother and stepfather, a case police have linked to a mental health crisis. Those charges are allegations, and the investigation into both cases continues.
